As a parent, you play a crucial role in your child’s musical journey. In this blog our expert tutor Carley has some practical and engaging tips to help you support your child’s practice sessions effectively. Whether your child is just starting out or has been playing for a while, these insights will make practicing a more enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Let them do their thing
Let your child decide how to practice and offer your support and feedback. Don’t be a “helicopter parent” and watch over their every move. Avoid using a timer, as this can make practice feel like a punishment. Instead, help them set a specific goal, such as “I want to master this section by the end of this session.”
Make practice a habit
Find out what time of day suits your child best, and schedule it on the calendar. When practice becomes part of their daily routine, like brushing their teeth or having family dinner, they are more likely to do it without complaining.
Find out what sparks their interest
Of course, they need to practice the basics, like scales and exercises, but they also need to play songs that they love and admire. Some children may not express their preferences, so ask them regularly if they are happy with the material their teacher chooses. You can also expose them to different kinds of music or take them to a concert to inspire them with positive examples.
Help your child set goals and celebrate when they achieve them
Reaching milestones can be a great incentive! Think of a reward that will motivate them, such as a fun music book or a local concert.
Keep it positive
Remind your child that every musician faces challenges at some point, and that success requires patience and hard work. Over time, they will see that the practice they put in makes a difference in their progress and performance—and that’s a valuable lesson for life.
