Â
Frequency over length
One thing I always tell my students is that frequent and consistent guitar practice is far more important than long practice sessions. If I had to pick between one 60min practice session or six 10min practice sessions, you better believe I'm choosing the second! While long amounts of practice are certainly good, it's the consistent practice throughout the week that gives your brain a better chance to develop good muscle memory.Â
Â
Use a metronome
Nobody likes using a metronome at first, but when practicing it's a good habit to incorporate it as much as possible. The metronome will not only help you lock in the rhythm of your guitar parts, but it will develop your overall sense of rhythm as a guitarist and musician.Â
Start slow, speed up gradually
When learning a particularly difficult guitar riff or chord progression it is important to give your brain time to develop the necessary muscle memory. Trying to play at full speed straight away is like trying to do a 200-meter sprint without training. It is far more helpful to slow down, get it sounding good, and then slowly speed up. The more you do this over time, the easy it'll be to learn new things! Â
